Everything to Know About Sculptra
After being released as a dermal filler in 1999, Sculptra quickly gained popularity. Its ability to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production can smooth fine lines, firm the skin and restore lost facial volume, creating natural-looking and long-lasting results.
What Is Sculptra?
Sculptra is the first, and only, FDA-approved biocompatible, non-animal-derived filler to treat several imperfections in the skin, such as facial wrinkles, folds, sunken contours and more. It is delivered through several injections into the dermis of the face.
In 2014, Sculptra was approved to be an aesthetic wrinkle and fold treatment. Now, anyone can use Sculptra to achieve a softer and more youthful appearance.
How Does Sculptra Work?
Many people mistakenly assume Sculptra functions as other fillers do, but there is much more to Sculptra than what meets the eye. Sculptra targets the underlying cause of wrinkles to restore collagen loss that naturally occurs with aging.
This filler is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is a compound that works to increase collagen production. Once Sculptra is injected into the skin, PLLA will stimulate the collagen receptors that rest deep in the skin to create firmer and plumper skin.
The Sculptra Treatment — What to Expect
To get started, you will schedule an initial consultation with a specialist to review your medical history, including any underlying health conditions or allergies. If you pass the requirements, you will be cleared for the procedure.
During your first treatment session, a certified aesthetic nurse practitioner will map out the injection areas on your face. They will then inject the filler into your skin using a thin needle for small injections. Patients can receive between one to three vials per treatment.
Most have little to no discomfort from these injections and you can return to normal activities immediately after.
How Long Does Sculptra Last?
Every Sculptra treatment plan is individualized to each patient, providing them with desired results. On average, patients will receive three injection sessions in roughly four to six-week intervals, over a total of three or four months.
You can see results from Sculptra almost immediately, but it may take up to a few months to see the full results. With the use of PLLA to rebuild collagen, Sculptra results can last up to two years. According to a study performed by Galderma, 100% of patients stated they still had improvement to fine lines and wrinkles 2 years after their last Sculptra treatment!
